Initiation What type of organisms exist besides plant and animals? How do you know they are different than a plant or and animal?

Classification of Organisms hummingbird- main_full.jpg hummingbird- main_full.jpg Part3 Kingdoms and Domains

Key Question How are organisms grouped into specific kingdoms and domains?

Objective SWBAT...classify organisms into specific kingdoms and domains.

Key Points As new organisms are discovered, scientists determine the appropriate kingdom that particular organism falls into. The six kingdom system of classification includes Eubacteria, Archeabacteria, Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. The three domains include Eukarya, Bacteria, Archaea.

Major Vocabulary Kingdom Domain

5 Kingdoms vs. 6 Kingdoms Early scientists used to only classify organisms into to Kingdoms: Plantae and Animalia. Eventually as technology improved, 5 Kingdoms were used to classify organisms: Plantae, Animalia, Fungi, Protista, Monera. Recently, scientists determined that the Kingdom Monera was actually two distinct Kingdoms: Eubacteria and Archaebacteria. Why do you think scientists changed from a 5 Kingdom to a 6 Kingdom classification system?

Biology Rewind: Plant vs. Animal Take about 3 minutes and tell me 3 differences between plant and animal cells. Hint: Look on page 175 of your biology book. Answer: 1. Plant cells have a thick cell wall. 2. Plant cells have chloroplasts. 3. Plant cells have a large central vacuole.

3 Domains Scientists soon discovered that only having 6 kingdoms was not good enough. They needed a taxon to be more inclusive than a Kingdom. As a result, scientists created 3 Domains: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya

Domain Bacteria Unicellular bacteria. Prokaryotic cells. Corresponds to the Kingdom Eubacteria. Extremely diverse

Domain Archaea Unicellular Prokaryotic Cells Corresponds to the Kingdom Archaebacteria. Live in extreme environments.

Biology Rewind: Origin of the Eukaryotic Cell. Describe a theory that hypothesizes about the origins of the eukaryotic cell. Hint: Look on page 427 of your biology textbook. Endosymbiotic Theory!!!!

Domain Eukarya Consists of all organisms that have cells with nuclei. Includes 4 different Kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia

Biology Rewind: Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote Construct a vin diagram showing the differences and similarities between Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cell. Prokaryotic Eukaryotic Both Hint: pg. 172-173

Termination Describe what we learned about today.
