1 Classification Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, and Bacteria, and Archaebacteria, and everything else….Oh my!

2 Classification Click Here for Official Definition
Classification - basic method humans use to organize the living world. Easy and time-saving Tells us about organism interrelationships Allows information to cross language and cultural barriers Various fields depend on the correct identification of disease-causing organisms and insect pests Click Here for Official Definition

3 Types of Classification
smallest Organisms are grouped into smaller and smaller groups based on their differences and similarities. largest

4 Domains Three Domains: Archaea Bacteria Eukarya

5 Domains What’s the difference between the domains?
Eukaryotic cells versus Prokaryotic cells Domain Eukarya have Eukaryotic cells (Nucleus!) Domains Archaea and Bacteria have Prokaryotic cells (No Nucleus!)

6 Kingdom Archaebacteria
Kingdoms Each Domain is broken into Kingdoms. Kingdom Fungi Domain Eukarya Kingdom Plantae Kingdom Animalia Kingdom Protista Domain Bacteria Kingdom Eubacteria Domain Archaea Kingdom Archaebacteria

7 How does classification work?
Life prokaryotic eukaryotic… All prokaryotic organisms are in Domain Archaea or Domain Bacteria Organisms are divided between them by the slight differences in the organisms’ cell structure. Ex. Cell walls have peptidoglycan Ex. Cell walls have no peptidoglycan Domain Bacteria Domain Archaea Kingdom Eubacteria Kingdom Archaebacteria

8 How does classification work?
Sorting eukaryotic organisms into Kingdoms: prokaryotic or eukaryotic unicellular or multicellular autotrophic or heterotrophic mode of reproduction

9 Life eukaryotic prokaryotic… Domain Eukarya heterotrophic autotrophic
Not plants, animals, or fungi heterotrophic Kingdom Protista Sexual reproduction autotrophic Asexual reproduction Kingdom Plantae Eukaryotic Unicellular or Multi-cellular Autotrophic or Heterotrophic Sexual or Asexual Reproduction Kingdom Animalia Kingdom Fungi Eukaryotic Multi-cellular Autotrophic Sexual Reproduction Eukaryotic Multi-cellular Heterotrophic Sexual Reproduction Eukaryotic Unicellular or Multi-cellular Heterotrophic Asexual Reproduction

10 So now what? Now it’s your turn! Break into pairs.
Each pair send up a representative to collect a plastic organism bag and a Kingdom Answer Key. When you return to your desk, WRITE YOUR NAMES on the Kingdom Answer Key. Listen for more instructions.
