NATIONAL STATISTICAL SERVICE OF GREECE DIVISION OF POPULATION AND LABOUR MARKET STATISTICS Head the Division Mrs Evagelia Oikonomou George Kotsifakis Head of the Labour Force Survey Section

The structure division on Population and Labour market statistics

Labour Force Survey n The NSSG conducts since 1971 the labour force survey which covers a sample of private households (the sample size is 1% of total number of households from the survey of 1998 and after- 31.000 questionnaires). n n The purpose of the survey is to study the employment situation of the household members aged 15 years old and over in combination with other demographic and social characteristics (sex, age, educational level, region etc)

Data collection   Since 1998 the survey is fully compatible with 577/98 Council Regulation and takes place every quarter of each calendar year.   In every quarter the 1/6 of the sample households are “new” and 5/6 are the same with the previous quarter   The data collection is taking place up to now in printed questionnaires.

Managers and Supervisors In Labour Force Survey in order to classify profession we use 3 digit ISCO 88 which adapted to the National Requirements So in this 3 digit level we have one to one correspondence with ISCO 88 121 Directors and chief executives 121 122 Production and operations managers 122 123

Managers and Supervisors The only difference is in the definition of 123 in which we use the term : Managers of the supporting services in which include what is under 1231-1239 codes.  In 121 we classify the directors with high education skills  In 122 we classify directors or managers in enterprises with more than 10 people staff.here the education level could be and lower (secondary education and up)

Managers and Supervisors n n In the Greek 3-digit level code we haven’t the code: 131 Managers of small enterprises Instead of this we have :

131 Managers of small enterprises in agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing 1311 132 Managers of small enterprises in manufacturing 1312 133Managers of small enterprises in construction 1313 134 Managers of small enterprises in wholesale and retail trade 1314 135 Managers of small enterprises of restaurants and hotels 1315 136 Managers of small enterprises in transport, storage and communications 1316 Managers and Supervisors

139 Managers of small enterprises not elsewhere classifie 1317 Managers of 1317 Managers of Small enterprises of business services enterprises enterprises 1318 Managers of small enterprises in personal care, cleaning and related services 1319Managers of small 1320enterprises not elsewhere classified Managers and Supervisors

One problem which we are face now is that in cases of self employment people in trade to put in 134 or in 532 salesmen According to new LFS regulation which will in force since next year one more variable will include : SUPVISOR Col.36: Supervisory responsibilities  Supervisory responsibility includes formal responsibility for supervising other employees (other than apprentices), whom they supervise directly, sometimes doing some of the work they supervise and excludes quality control (check output of services but not the work produced by other persons) and consultancy.  A person with supervisory responsibilities takes charge of the work, directs the work and sees that is satisfactorily carried out.

Managers and Supervisors  Sometimes job titles can be misleading. For example, a ‘playground supervisor’ supervises children not employees and so should be coded 2. Similarly, a ‘store manager’ may be a storekeeper and not a supervisor of employees. In some cases the person is cumulating supervising responsibilities with other functions; even if the supervising responsibilities constitute a part of their job, they should be coded 1.  A person is considered to have supervisory responsibilities when they supervise the work of at least one person.  Persons who are having supervisory responsibilities only because they are replacing temporarily a superior absent should not be considered as having supervisory responsibilities.  The definition of temporarily here is left to the respondent.Members of groups with collective responsibility should be considered as having supervisory responsibilities.
