Visual Examples of Line in Everyday Life

 A line is an identifiable path of a point moving in space. It can vary in width, direction and length.  It can be used in a variety of ways to show other elements of art and principles of design.  This power-point shows many examples of line in everyday life and ways it can enhance your artwork.

Multiple lines in a row like this can be used to show repeition or pattern.

Curvy lines can show many things like, hair, tornados, springs, organic objects, movements, etc. The sky is the limit.

In this example, you can see many lines going in different directions. You can also see lines making shapes. A shape is just a line that touches together to create the shape within.

Here is another examples of line creating shapes.

Do you see the shape?

Making multiple lines close together is a technique that can create texture.

The multiple lines make this plant appear to be thick and bushy. Also, each line thins out at the tip making each leaf look sharp and pointy.

Another example of how multiple lines can create texture.

See how the lines of the railroad tracks curve around and disappears into the trees?

In this example, the line breaks up the foreground and background.

See how the lines of the books all recede into space? This creates depth in art.

This is an example of how lines can be angled to show one point perspective. All lines point to one spot in space.

See how the lines recede into space. The lines of the bridge appear to have a vanishing point off in the distance.

Having two vanishing points is a good way to show corners of walls in a building. This opens up the space and makes an image of room look three- dimensional.

Here is another example of having two-vanishing points. Lines can be angled to create the illusion of an open box.

You can see how the circular lines create the ripples in the water. This is one effect of making movement in artwork.

The lines shooting from the center in a circular motions make the shape look as if it is spinning.

Wavy lines like the ones in this flag can show movement of objects.

Repetitive lines can be used to show pattern like it does with this set of lockers.

Think about your composition when making art. Making your lines go off the page is a good way to make a successful composition.

 Line is one of the most important elements.  As you’ve seen here, line helps to create many other elements of art and principles of design.  When creating artwork, remember all the techniques you can do with line and you will have successful piece.

 You will create a landscape using line, pattern, and contrast.  Pattern: any design that repeats itself.  Contrast: showing the difference between two elements, in this case black vs. white.  The more lines and variety of patterns you use, the more successful your artwork will be.  You must use at least 5 different types of lines and 5 different types of patterns.  See the board for you due date.
