Campus IT Resources (Overview) Personal Computing Instructional Computing Campus Network and Infrastructure Research Computing Environment Purchasing Hardware/Software o Desktop Enhancement Program Service and Support for IT-related Issues Information Technology

Access to Computing Resources Access Via Single Sign-On (SSO) login account o Referred to as: User ID & SSO ID SSO Account provides authenticated access: o Desktop/CLC systems (Win, Unix, Mac) o Information Kiosks (I-SPOTs) o S&T Network from off-campus: VPN (Requires ISP) o 1 GB Email storage, 500 MB (up to 2Gb at no additional cost) of network file storage (DFS), $10 Miner Money Print Quota for CLCs, Blackboard, PeopleSoft, etc. Information Technology

Personal Computing Support for Windows, Macintosh and Unix* o Campus systems (approximate):  4300  PC/Windows  200  Linux, Solaris Unix systems  150  Macintosh o Support focus and bench strength  Windows * Unix base support includes installation of OS and applications and verification of network and e-mail connectivity. Limited support available for applications. Information Technology

Instructional Computing Educational Technology (EdTech) team helps you use technology efficiently and effectively to improve student learning. EdTech can help you with… eLearning & Course Design Services Learning Technology Support Computer Learning Centers (CLCs) & Classroom Technology Information Technology

eLearning and Course Design Teaching and Learning First, Technology Second Instructional design consultation and course redesign support Instructional technology consultation and usage support – in-person, classroom walk-throughs, faculty learning communities Content development support – video captioning, video production, Blackboard course building, clicker slide construction eStudio - a resource for instructors to explore, learn, and use new and emerging media and technologies for creating course content to enhance student learning Information Technology

Learning Technology Anywhere Technology Blackboard – course materials, assignments, discussion boards Wimba – online office hours, remote presentations, student collaboration Tegrity – lecture capture to enhance student learning, remote proctoring Respondus, Diploma – online assessments (quizzes, exams) Google Apps for Education – enhance student group collaboration Various resources to help you manage your online instructional content more efficiently Virtual CLCs – expanding pilot to allow access to CLC software anywhere EdTech can help you with many more learning technologies See http://edtech.mst.edu/supporthttp://edtech.mst.edu/support Information Technology

Computer Learning Centers (CLCs) and Classroom Technology On-the-Ground Technology 900+ computers in 115+ locations (80 classrooms, 36 CLCs) Classroom systems are built to support classroom presentations in a standardized easy-to-use way “Clicker” (student response system) support CLCs systems share a common base installation build, with discipline-specific software added as needed to support classwork Software needed in CLCs must be requested during the request window that occurs each fall and spring semester, in order for the software to be available the following semester. You will receive email notifications announcing the CLC Software Request window. Information Technology

Educational Technology Location: 102 Centennial Hall, or we will come to you Website: edtech.mst.eduedtech.mst.edu Blog: edtechconnect.mst.eduedtechconnect.mst.edu CLC Website: edtech.mst.edu/clcedtech.mst.edu/clc Plan to attend the annual Teaching and Learning Technology Conference during Spring Recess – watch for the call to participate! 12 Research Computing Facility Information Technology Numerically Intensive Computing (NIC) Cluster Primarily for student and academic use o nic-cluster.mst.edu nic-cluster.mst.edu o Current Specifications: o Total of 991 CPUs across 180 hosts 2,914 GB of RAM 56,255 GB of scratch disk space 12 TB of user storage space 1.2 Teraflops Upgrades in compute nodes, storage, high speed networking in progress o Request an account via the IT Help Desk (341-HELP). Funded Research Cluster Hosting S&T participates in Internet2 research network.

Infrastructure Servers/Services Email: Microsoft Exchange o Exchange supports POP/SMTP, IMAP, & MAPI protocols. o SPAM email filtering -- automatically enabled Account File Storage: DFS – Distributed File System o S: drive 25GB o Internet Accessible through VPN, DFS, SFTP, etc. o Backed up by Information Technology for disaster recovery o Personal web space available upon request (50 MB) o Y:\ used for departmental share space Research volumes are created for faculty research purposes – 200GB o Research should always be performed using research accounts—not individual/SSO faculty, staff, or student accounts. Information Technology

Campus Network and Internet Accessing Services When Traveling Access e-mail through web browser: minermail.mst.eduminermail.mst.edu Using Virtual Private Networking (VPN): o Why?  Identifies your connected computer as a S&T computer (treats it as if it were an on-campus system). Computer is assigned a S&T IP/network address.  Communications between your computer and S&T computers is encrypted (while traveling over the Internet) for privacy/protection.  Allows your computer access to services normally not allowed to off campus systems (library tools, online training materials, SMTP sendmail, etc.).  Check the IT “How To” Library: http://it.mst.edu/how_to/index.htmlhttp://it.mst.edu/how_to/index.html Information Technology

Purchasing Hardware/Software Contact the Help Desk for technology purchasing assistance: http://it.mst.edu/faculty_staff/help_index.html Desktops, Laptops, Printers & Software: o Recommend Dell Optiplex & Latitude families (Dell’s corporate line of computers) o Recommend HP printer line (multi-user, duplex capable, networked printers) o See: http://it.mst.edu/faculty_staff/hardsoftpurchasing/index.htmlhttp://it.mst.edu/faculty_staff/hardsoftpurchasing/index.html o For personal (home use) purchases you may work with the University Bookstore for academic and VPA prices.
