2 What is Poetry? Poetry is language that uses figures of speech, sound devices, and imagery designed to appeal to emotion and imagination. It is usually arranged in a particular way on the page. SO…. You can think of poets as artists who create something with words!

3 Stanza A group of lines in a poem are called a stanza. For example: At dusk from the island in the riverSTANZA 1 and if it’s not too cold, I’ll wait for the moonSTANZA 2 To rise.

4 Activity Turn to page 10 in the blue books. After reading complete the following activities: 1. Each stanza of “Valentine expresses the same basic idea but in a different way. Tell what this idea is. Then, explain how the stanzas in “Ox Cart Man” differ from those in “Valentine” Do they express similar or different ideas? How do the stanzas help develop the main theme of the poem? 2. Write two additional stanzas for “Valentine”. Follow the rhyme pattern of the three other stanzas. Your new stanzas should express your own ideas.

5 Sounds of Poetry Rhyme is the repetition of vowel sounds and all sounds following them in words close together in a poem. What words rhyme in this stanza? Chipmunks jump, and Green snakes slither. Rather burst than Not be with her.

6 Sounds of Poetry Three different types of rhyme are: *End – words that rhyme at the end of a line. *Internal – words that rhyme within lines. *Slant – similar rhymes but not quite the same. What type of rhyme is located in “Valentine”?

7 Sounds of Poetry Other types of sounds in poetry are: * Alliteration- the repetition of consonant sounds in words that are close together. Example: Soft lapping waves lull Lucy to sleep. What sound is repeated?

8 Sounds of Poetry Onomatopoeia is the use of words with sounds that imitate the meaning. Examples: clip, buzz, whir, hiss, boom.

9 Activity A Tutor A tutor who tooted the flute Tried to tutor two tooters to toot. Said the two to the tutor, “Is it harder to toot, or To tutor two tooters to toot?” What consonant is repeated? What other “sounds of poetry” are in this poem?

10 Sounds of Poetry A refrain is a group of words, sounds, phrases, or group of lines that is repeated in a poem or song. Write down a refrain that you know!! Share!

11 Activity Turn to page 4 in the blue book. After reading complete the following activities: 1.Locate and write down two examples of alliteration, rhyme, and onomatopoeia. 2.How many stanzas are in this poem?

12 Homework Make a list of at least ten words or phrases that describe sounds around you. Be prepared to share.
