Chemical Bond Review Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic Bonds

Ionic Bonding Recall… Ionic compounds contain positive and negative ions. The number of positive charges must equal the number of negative charges so that the compound has no charge overall. The number of positive charges must equal the number of negative charges so that the compound has no charge overall. When the positive ion has the same number of charges as the negative ion, it is easy to work out the formula of the compound formed. Example: Sodium chloride contains sodium ions, Na +, and chloride ions, Cl –. As both ions have single charges, the formula is simply written as NaCl, i.e. the positive ion followed by the negative ion with no charges written.

Ionic Bonding When the number of charges are different, follow these steps: Ex: Mg 2+ Cl -1 1. Write the ions side by side 2. Draw arrows that cross each other 3. Write the charges at the arrow ends 4. Write the formula as follows: a) write the positive ion (cation) without its charge b) write the number as a subscript unless it is 1 c) write the negative ion (anion) without its charge d) write the number as a subscript unless it is 1

Ionic Bonding Reminders The metal should come before the non-metal The compound should always be electrically neutral Transition metals should have a roman numeral next to them (except for aluminum and zinc) The second part of the compound should end in “ide” unless it is a polyatomic ion.

Ionic Bonding Game What to do… You will be going around the room making as many ionic bonds with your neighbors as possible You will have 5 min. You will have 5 min. Make sure you have a piece of paper and a pencil There will be some things you will need to write down….

What you need to write down… Make the following table…… Ex: Na+ S-2 Na+ S-2 Na 2 S Sodium Sulfur The person with the most correct compounds at the end of 5 minutes wins a prize! Lets Play! Positive IonNegative IonBalanced Chemical Formula Chemical Name

Covalent Bonding Recall… Covalent Compounds are Non-metals with non-metals NOnitrogen oxide BrClbromine chloride

Covalent Bonding As a rule, the element that is further to the left on the periodic table is listed first. The number of atoms of an element in simple covalent compounds is indicated by adding one of the following Greek prefixes to the name of the element. 1 mono-6 hexa- 2 di-7 hepta- 3 tri-8 octa- 4 tetra-9 nona- 5 penta-10 deca-

Covalent Bonding Game A Quick Review….. What are Covalent Bonds? Chemical bonds between non-metals and non- metals Chemical bonds between non-metals and non- metals Atoms SHARE electrons Atoms SHARE electrons List the element that comes first on the periodic table first. Criss cross your oxidation numbers (charges) to find your formulas.

What you need to write down… Make the following table…… C-4 F-1 CF 4 Carbon Tetrafluoride The person with the most correct compounds at the end of 5 minutes wins a prize! Lets Play! Ion #1Ion #2Balanced Chemical Formula Chemical Name

What you need to write down… Make the following table…… Ex: Na K K Potassium 1 e- Metallic Lets Play! Atomic SymbolAtomic NameValence Electrons Type of Bond
