T HE B OOKSTORE NOW HAS CLICKERS ! H ELP C ENTER & G RAPHING A SSIGNMENT Announcements

Where are we? Structures of Elements Compounds Covalent (nonmetal+nonmetal) Molecular covalent Network covalent Ionic (nonmetal+metal)

Formulas for Acetic Acid Molecular= C2H4O2C2H4O2 Empirical= CH 2 O Condensed Structural= CH 3 COOH

Naming Molecular Compounds Binary compounds- 2 different elements Name first element, using full name Name second element, adding –ide Use prefixes to indicate # of atoms  Only use prefix for first name if >1 atom  Always use prefix for second element Examples  CO N2ON2O  BF 3 #Prefix 1mono- 2di- 3tri- 4tetra- 5penta- 6hexa- 7hepta- 8octa- 9nona- 10deca- Exception: Some materials have common names (e.g. H 2 O=water, NH 3 =ammonia)

Where to next? Structures of Elements CompoundsCovalent Molecular covalent Network covalent Ionic

Ions Cations  Positive charge (think “Ca + ion”)  Obtain charge by __?__- ing an electron  Usually form from metals Anions  Negative charge  Obtain charge by __?__- ing an electron  Usually form from nonmetals

Monatomic Ions- Formed from single atoms

Naming Ions Cations  Name of element + “ion”  Na + = sodium ion  Mg 2+ = magnesium ion  Transition metals are “special”  Fe 2+ = iron (II) ion  Fe 3+ = iron (III) ion Anions  Name of element with an –ide ending + “ion”  Cl - = chloride ion  O 2- = oxide ion

Polyatomic Ions you need to know

How Ionic Bonds Form…

Ionic Compound Formulas Compound will be neutral  Total positive charge = Total negative charge  Example: CationAnionCompound Na + Cl - NaCl Ca 2+ Cl - CaCl 2 Mg 2+ SO4 2- ? Na + CO 3 2- ?

What is the formula of the ionic compound produced by Mg 2+ and SO 4 2- ? 1. MgSO 4 2. Mg 2 SO 4 3. Mg(SO 4 ) 2 4. MgSO 2

What is the formula of the ionic compound produced by Na + and CO 3 2- ? 1. NaCO 3 2. Na(CO 3 ) 2 3. Na 2 CO 3 4. Na 2 (CO 3 ) 2

Ionic Compound Formulas Compound will be neutral  Total positive charge = Total negative charge  Example: CationAnionCompound Na + Cl - NaCl Ca 2+ Cl - CaCl 2 Mg 2+ SO4 2- MgSO 4 Na + CO 3 2- Na 2 CO 3

Naming Ionic Compounds Compound name= cation name + anion name Examples:  NaCl  Sodium chloride  NH 4 Br  Ammonium bromide  HCN  Hydrogen cyanide
