Internet Vocabulary CTE Intro

URL The “address” of a website. Entering this address in the Address Bar will take you directly to a particular website. Ex: www.google.comwww.google.com Warning: Do NOT type in an address if you aren’t sure it exists. You might see something you didn’t intend.

WWW World Wide Web – not all websites are on the World Wide Web, but most will require it in order to get in. Most websites begin with: http://www.

Browser A program that allows you to interact with internet. This is what you click on to get to the internet. There are several popular browsers: Explorer Netscape Firefox Google Chrome Safari

Search Engine Powerful servers that keep an index of information on the Internet. Google Yahoo Ask.com Remember—search engines don’t “think.” They search by KEYWORD.

Network A number of computers connected together to share information and hardware. A Local Area Network (LAN) is small, perhaps a few computers sharing a printer. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is large, with many computers linked between towns or countries. The Internet is a network of networks that circles the globe.

Server A computer that delivers information and software to other computers linked by a network All websites must be uploaded to a server in order to be seen by the public on the website.

HTML Code A code language used to create websites on the internet. Websites look very different when you see only the code. Every command has a code, such as: Mrs. Rees is Awesome! The <> is code, and will not actually show up when the page is loaded onto the internet. This is the code for bolding text.
