Grammar Parts of Speech Nouns name persons, places, or things (dog, toy, courage) Pronouns stand in for nouns (she, he, it, they) Verbs tell what a person, place, or thing does (run, stop, laugh) Adverbs describe verbs, adverbs, and adjectives (sing loudly, well-behaved dog) Adjectives describe nouns or pronouns (happy people, he was happy) Prepositions show words in relation to others (under the rug, beside the tree) Conjunctions connect words or groups of words (hot or cold, he jumped and caught the ball) Interjections show emotion or strong feelings (Whoops! Wow!)
