1 Introduction to A/AS geography at SCIE SCIE GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

2 What is Geography? Geography is the study of where places are, what they are like, what life is like in those places and how places are changing 地理学是研究具体事物的位置,以及地理 事物的表状,以及地理事物将来可能发生 的变化。

3 The A/AS Geography syllabus  The syllabus encourages students to understand the natural processes occurring at the Earth’s surface that provide the physical setting for human activities. It is concerned the relationship between humans and the physical environment. We call this part physical geography, including river system and water cycle, weather and climate, rocks and weathering (paper 1), tropical environment coastal environment hazardous environment arid and semi-arid environment (paper2)  Another part is human geography,which is made up of population change, settlement dynamics (paper1), production location and change environment management, global interdependence, economic transition(paper3)

4 Advanced subsidiary candidates will paper1  Marks = 50% of total A mark, 3 hours for you.  The paper will be divided into three sections which will assess the physical and the human core topics.  Section A: 50marks, five questions,you must answer all of them.  Section B: 25 marks, you have a choice from three questions based on physical geography core.  Section C:25 marks, you have a choice from three questions that maybe on a single topic or a combination of the two core human topics.

5 Advanced candidates will paper2 and paper3  Paper 2 and paper 3 will consist of separate question papers but both will be timetable for the same date and session.  Paper 2 will be concerned with advanced physical geography options, candidates will be required to answer two questions, each on a different topic.  Paper 3 will be concerned with advanced human geography options, candidates will be required to answer two questions, each on a different topic.  In both papers, all questions will carry 25 marks, 1.5hours for you.
