J Rehabil Res Dev. 2015;52(2):XX–XX. http://dx.doi.org/10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070 Slideshow Project DOI:10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070JSP Aim – Examine influence of noncircular chainring (NCC) compared with conventional circular chainring (CC) on hand cycling performance. Relevance – In racing and daily living, hand cycling is more efficient than handrim wheelchair propulsion.

J Rehabil Res Dev. 2015;52(2):XX–XX. http://dx.doi.org/10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070 Slideshow Project DOI:10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070JSP Method 11 nondisabled males with no hand cycling experience completed trials using NCC and CC in random order on two separate occasions: – Incremental exercise test. – Two 20 s sprint tests. – 20 min endurance tests. – Two more 20 s sprint tests. Two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance compared effects of NCC and CC on power data of sprint tests and metabolic response during endurance test.

J Rehabil Res Dev. 2015;52(2):XX–XX. http://dx.doi.org/10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070 Slideshow Project DOI:10.1682/JRRD.2014.03.0070JSP Results Average power values of sprint tests: – No significant difference between NCC and CC. Over time, values of 1st and 3rd sprint tests were higher than those of 2nd and 4th sprint tests for both chainrings. Values of energy expenditure, gross efficiency, and net efficiency after 10 and 20 min of endurance test using NCC and CC: – No significant differences.
