Outline A little bit about me! My experiences as an Engineering student –my deciding factors during high school –deciding on a discipline –my 1st year experience –summer jobs –Extra curricular

Deborah Messina I’m a 4th year Computer Engineering student at McMaster University I’m a 4th year Computer Engineering student at McMaster University What is Computer Engineering? What is the difference between Engineering and Science? What are some other types of Engineering?

I’m the Chair of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Student Branch at McMaster University I’m the Chair of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Student Branch at McMaster University I’m on an advisory committee for Women in Engineering I’m a student member of the PEO – Professional Engineers of Ontario … and I manage to make time for sports, going out with friends, and relaxing!

Why Engineering? Why Eng? Good in math & science Friends & Family Male dominated field The challenge Teachers advice

Engineering Disciplines Electrical ElectricalComputerCivilChemicalMaterial MechanicalManufacturingPhysics/ Engineering Science Software Bio- medical Microelectronics Digital communications Wireless systems Signal processing Microprocessors Control Power Hardware design Software Communication Networks Telecommunications Digital Signal Processing Image Processing Structures Environmental Transportation Geotechnical The study of the conversion of natural substances, using chemical and physical methods, into products for: structural microelectronics optical Biomedical Manufacturing Machinery design and operation Robotics Production processes Production control **Very Theoretical Fiber optic communication Robotics Nuclear Power Aerospace Microelectronics Lasers **New Program Pre-medicine qualification Biomedical imaging Signal processing Medical robotics

Life as a 1 st year… Independent – on your own Group work All engineering students stick together and help each other pass **BALANCE – work and play! Overwhelming –Academic clubs and sports clubs to join High responsibility –Attending lectures –Meeting deadlines

Summer Jobs After 1 st year:  Head Instructor of an Engineering and Science Camp (ESQ) in Waterloo After 2 nd year:  Database programmer for BuyBuddy.com After 3 rd year: After 3 rd year:  Network Consultant at Bell Nexxia After 4 th year:  Exchange to France

Extra Curricular Engineering Society IEEE Concrete Toboggan Solar Car Formula SAE Each discipline has its own club And much more…. Engineering student body representative organize events annual musicals Communicate with other engineering schools Engineering Olympics meet with professors and administration student newspaper the largest professional and technical organization in the world a network of people all around the world Creates standards for many devices Monthly magazines and newsletter with the latest technology technical and non-technical conferences Robotics competitions teach technical courses (linux, matlab, etc) Computer auction programming competition Much more http://ieeesb.mcmaster.ca Build a toboggan out of concrete and race against other Engineering schools. Be on a team that helps build and design a solar car that competes in an annual race against other engineering schools all around the world. High performance vehicle designed, built and tested entirely by undergraduate engineering students. Sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Formula SAE competition attracts more than a thousand students from as many as 100 colleges and universities throughout North America and Great Britain.
