Creativity and Design in Electrical & Computer Engineering Lecture 1 EE 101, Fall 2014 University of Kentucky

Welcome! Where are you? What are we going to do? What else can you do? What are you going to do when your done? Outline

ECE 101 is a course for: – Anyone trying to satisfy the Arts & Creativity requirement of the UK Core (one choice of many) – ECE majors (required) Most of this course will focus on creativity and hands-on projects Today will be a little different – General orientation topics, and specific ECE orientation topics Where are you?

Syllabus is coming up … – Every course you take will give you a syllabus Purpose – Gives students an idea of the course content, work load, grading policy, makeup policies, etc. – Course Outcomes Specific skills you will develop Important part of our accreditation What are we going to do?

An EE 101 student team presented their Student Creation (final project) at the IEEE SoutheastCon 2012 in Orlando – The annual Southeast Region IEEE meeting (Region 3) High Standards

As part of SoutheastCon’s annual meeting, there is a student paper competition – Entries accepted from Freshman to Senior level Many senior groups present their project work at the meeting – Cash prizes for top three papers (written+oral presentation) 1 st - $800, 2 nd - $500, 3 rd - $200 – How did our EE 101 students fair against the best students from the Southeast? SoutheastCon

#1!

What is CREATIVITY ? What is DESIGN ? What is ECE ? ?

Get involved! – http://www.engr.uky.edu/student-organizations/ http://www.engr.uky.edu/student-organizations/ – Association for Computing Machinery – Engineering Student Council – Engineers without Borders – IEEE (and subgroups/activities) – KY Society of Professional Engineers – Linux Users Group – National Society of Black Engineers – Phi Sigma Rho – Society of Automotive Engineers – UK Solar Car Team – Society of Women Engineers (SWE) – Tau Beta Pi “Freshman” is no reason to sit on the sidelines What to do outside of EE 101?

A BS in ECE opens the door to a vast range of professional opportunities – What are they? One place to start getting an idea of opportunities: – Look at the range of technical societies within the IEEE What to do when done here?

Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers The biggest single organization to which most ECE’s belong – World’s largest technical professional society Mission – To foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity Vision – IEEE will be essential to the global technical community and to technical professionals everywhere, and be universally recognized for the contributions of technology and of technical professionals in improving global conditions. What is IEEE?

Standards – IEEE sets standards to make the exchange of technical information possible Standards for High-Voltage Testing Standards for AC Substation Grounding Standards for Floating Point Computations Standards for Wireless Local Area Networks (802.11a,b,g,n,etc.) Etc., etc., etc. What does IEEE do for us?

Organizes societies, meetings, and publications (journals, conference papers, magazines) that help engineers disseminate information, learn from one another, and network – Teach others – Advertise your work/business – Find a job! – Find an employee – Continuing education What does IEEE do?

UK has a very active IEEE student branch – Faculty Advisor: Dr. Regina Hannemann – They are always doing something, and always looking for new people with new ideas – IEEE Robot team – Attends annual SoutheastCon meeting – Hosting SoutheastCon 2014!!! – GREAT opportunity to get involved IEEE and students

$32/year Benefits – Participate in our local student branch – Attend SoutheastCon and other conferences – Subscriptions to IEEE Spectrum and Potentials magazines – Join other IEEE societies that interest you IEEE Student Membership

IEEE Societies There are 38 – Each has its own meetings, conferences, publications, awards, etc. – Great way to find out more about areas that interest you – Go to IEEE.ORG (UK has subscriptions to all IEEE publications)

Getting familiar with COE & ECE Write number on a printout of each picture Pictures must include you & your teammates

When – 6-8 pm tonight Where – Engineering quad IEEE Student & Faculty Picnic
