1 DIGITAL MEDIA TIMELINE 1985-2014

2 1985  The Windows operating system was released by Microsoft.  Nintendo also released the Nintendo entertainment (video game) system.

3 1988  The NeXT cube is a high-end workstation computer developed, manufactured and sold by NeXT from 1990 until 1993. It superseded the original NeXT Computer workstation and is housed in a similar cube-shaped magnesium enclosure.

4 1989  The Game Boy is an 8-bit handheld video game device developed and manufactured by Nintendo. It was released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America in August 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990. It is the first handheld console in the Game Boy line.

5 1990 The World Wide Web prototype was created. Tim Berners-Lee shared his original prototype for an Internet browser that would allow people to share information by using a special mark-up language to post text, link to other documents, and display graphic images.

6 1991  Tim Bernes-Lee and CERN released the World Wide Web program. It was the only way to see the web. Much later it was renamed Nexus in order to save confusion between the program and the abstract information space (which is now spelled World Wide Web with spaces).

7 1992  Dec.1992- A mobile phone in the United Kingdom received one of the first SMS messages.

8 1993 In 1993, Intel announced the Pentium chip. The Pentium is a 32-bit chip with superscalar design, and is estimated to be two times faster than the 486DX2 (66MHz) chip. The Pentium uses dual pipelines to allow it to process two separate instructions in a single cycle. Don Alpert was the architecture manager of the Pentium, John Crawford was co- manager. In March 1994, Intel announced new and faster versions of the Pentium microprocessor.

9 1994 Yahoo! Inc. is an American multinational Internet corporation headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. It is globally known for its Web portal, search engine Yahoo Search, and related services.

10 1995 Aug- The Windows 95 operating system was released by microsoft. July- The Amazon e-commerce Web site begins service.

11 1998  The Windows 98 operating system was released by microsoft.

12 1999  Google was officially launched and flash drive

13 2000  Sony releases its Play Station2 Video Game Console.

14 2001  The ipod, Apple’s hard drive-based digital audio player, is introduced

15 2002  The BlackBerry smartphone was released.

16 2002 CONT’ Camera Phones — Introduced to the North American marketplace in 2002, an estimated 80 million camera phones were sold in 2003, — 6 million in the U.S. alone. By 2003 more camera phones were sold worldwide than stand- alone digital cameras. At the end of 2008, the world-installed base of camera phones was 1.9 billion.

21 2007  On January 9 Apple’s Steve Jobs introduces the iphone.

22 2008  Creation Technologies LP is a global electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Creation provides full service electronics solutions to a diversified group of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) across North America and worldwide, and has 11 manufacturing operations in Canada, the USA and China.

23 2009 Android is a mobile operating system (OS) based on the Linux kernel and currently developed by Google. With a user interface based on direct manipulation, Android is designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers, with specialized user interfaces for televisions (Android TV), cars (Android Auto), and wrist watches (Android Wear). The OS uses touch inputs that loosely correspond to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching, and reverse pinching to manipulate on-screen objects, and a virtual keyboard. Despite being primarily designed for touchscreen input, it also has been used in game consoles, digital cameras, and other electronics.

27 2012  Pinterest was created. This is a means used by a wide range of persons to broadcast artwork and make a name for themselves.

28 2013  Xbox One is a video game console developed and marketed by Microsoft. Announced on May 21, 2013, it is the successor to the Xbox 360 and is the third console in the Xbox family. It directly competes with Sony's PlayStation 4 and Nintendo's Wii U as part of the eighth generation of video game consoles.

29 2014  It's long been the stuff of science fiction, but tech giants hope the "smart home", where gadgets talk to each other and the fridge orders the milk, will soon become reality.

30 2014 CONT’  Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle have come up-with a SideSwipe system that enables in-air gestures above and around a mobile device. This is an interesting way to interact with the phone without using physical buttons or touchscreens.
