4 The goals of this lessons is to... n help students understand the concept of bullying and its impact it can have on others.

5 By the end of the period, students will be able to… n define different types of bullying. n identify different ways of reporting bullying. n demonstrate knowledge of the impact of bullying.

6 Bullying at Bonita Vista Middle n In the last year: –21 % of BVMS students have been harassed. –20% of BVMS students have been in a fight. –23% of BVMS students have been afraid of being beaten up.

7 Bullying Across the Country n Bullying occurs most frequently from 6th to 8th grade. n Bullying is the leading cause of attempted suicide among children. n 75 percent of school shooters were bullied at least once in their lifetime. n Over 160,000 children miss school for fear of being bullied every day. 8 What is Bullying? n Bullying: –is any action targeted to hurt someone else. –is an abuse of POWER. –can be physical, verbal, or social. California Dept of ED: Bullying at School

9 Types of Bullying n Physical: hitting, kicking, or pushing n Verbal: name calling, teasing, threats n Social: spreading rumors, ignoring others, telling lies

10 Who Are the Bullies? n There is no one type of person that is a bully. Anyone can participate in bullying activities.

11 Who are the victims of bullying? n Anyone can be a victim of bullying.

12 Ways to Report Bullying n “Bullybox”: In the Counseling Center n Speak with your counselors, teachers, parents, or a responsible adult. n WE CAN HELP YOU Adapted from C. Cura

13 What if you are being bullied? n Tell the bully to leave you alone n Walk away and act sure of yourself n Report incident to “Bully Box” or tell an adult! n Try to talk about the problem with someone n Avoid violence Adapted from C. Cura

14 What if someone else is getting bullied? n Report bullying incidents you witness at school to an adult. n Encourage and help others to report if they can’t do it alone. n Show disappointment in the behavior by not joining in when someone is getting teased or humiliated. n Don’t participate in spreading rumors.
