1 Constitutional Bill of Rights Issues
Here are some topics to choose from for your CBA Project. Please listen carefully, you will be choosing your topic by Wed 4th. this week and writing the thesis/claim and 3 supporting reasons.

Is the death penalty cruel and unusual punishment? Are certain methods of execution more “humane” than others? Are victims rights more important than criminal rights?

3 FLAG BURNING Should it be illegal to destroy the American flag as an act of protest? Is it unpatriotic or protected under freedom of speech (expression)?

4 FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN SCHOOLS
Should students be allowed to wear T-shirts that express disrespectful messages about the president? Are such T-shirts disruptive to the learning environment?

5 COMPULSORY FLAG SALUTE
Should students be forced to say the Pledge of Allegiance in school? Should students be allowed to refrain from saying the Pledge, but asked to stand out of respect? Should the phrase “under God” be removed from the Pledge?

6 GUN CONTROL LAWS Was it the intention of the second amendment to give ALL citizens the right to own ANY weapon? Should guns be legal in public places such as a celebration at Seattle Center? Should we have stricter gun control laws? Do gun control laws deter (prevent) crime? Why does the United States have so many more deaths by gun shot than any other industrialized nation?

7 CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN SCHOOLS
Is corporal punishment “cruel and unusual punishment” or “tough love”? Should schools reinstate corporal punishment to improve student behavior? Should the Constitution have an amendment banning corporal punishment nationwide?

8 DOUBLE JEOPARDY Should the government be allowed to accuse someone of a crime more than once? What if the police find more evidence after someone has been found innocent?

9 RIGHT TO PRIVACY Should the government be allowed to listen to your phone calls without you knowing? Should the government be allowed to read your mail or ? What is more important, right to privacy or the safety of the people? Do you trust the government to only invade your privacy when necessary?

10 TEEN CURFEWS Should teen curfews be enforced? Does having a curfew really keep kids from getting into trouble? Should cities/towns enact curfews to get teens who loiter in the early mornings off the streets? Does having curfews deter (prevent) teen crime? Does it restrict the right of the people peaceably to assemble…

11 ILLEGAL SEARCH AND SEIZURE
Should teachers, principals, and other school staff members be allowed to search your backpack without your permission? What if you suspected a student from your school had a weapon in their backpack? Should police be allowed to search homes, cars, and other private property without a warrant?

12 OTHER? Is there another Constitutional issue out there that you would like to tackle? Such as search of cell phones as evidence if arrested, texting/cell phone while driving, school uniforms, school laptop web cameras, juveniles transferred to adult courts. All alternative topics must be approved by Ms. Kissinger before you start researching. Topics due Wed 4th so you can start research in computer lab on Thursday this week.
