4 CORE MESSAGE STEPP is an eTextbook rental program offering cost-effective textbooks that “all” college students can read.

6 KEY POINTS  Funded by U.S. Dep’t of Education  FIPSE’s “Pilot Program for Course Material” “…provide the option for students to rent course materials in order to achieve savings for students.”  STEPP is a partnership between AMAC, ATN, and CourseSmart®  Students can save an average of 50% or more by renting rather than buying

9  80% of titles can be accessed using a screen reader  Non-tagged vs. Tagged eTextbooks  Non-tagged  Source file from publisher  Similar to DSP requesting PDF from publisher  Tagged  Optimized for best user experience  Fixes reading order, alt text, headings, list, tables, word spacing, soft-hyphens, ligatures, etc.

10 ACCESSIBILITY  Titles are tagged on a per request basis  Submit request for a specific title to be “tagged” to: accessibility@coursesmart.comaccessibility@coursesmart.com  Timely and high quality  STEPP generally does not tag STEM titles due to their complex nature (e.g. formulas, graphs, models, etc.)

11 ACCESSING ETEXTBOOKS  Access to eTextbooks requires a web- enabled device and internet browser  Online and offline  Offline access supported by Firefox 3.6+, Safari 5.1+, and Chrome  Screen readers  Users with blindness or visual impairment (e.g. NVDA and JAWS®)  Users with LD (e.g. TextAloud and ClaroRead)  Depending on the screen reader used, student may have to contact accessibility@coursesmart.com to enable the accessible readeraccessibility@coursesmart.com

19 BOOKSTORES  Check if your campus store offers CourseSmart eTextbooks  Student may rent eTextbook through store’s website or at the physical store  Pick up in-store eTextbook shelf card and pay at cash register  Receipt contains instructions for accessing book online

22 BENEFITS  By renting rather than buying, VR spends less money on books for their clients  Clients get access to books fairly quickly allowing them to focus on their studies rather than worrying about getting books
