Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved Building a Smarter Planet Lesson 4: Designing your own Smarter ideas

Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved Lesson objectives By the end of the lesson you should be able to:  Identify a problem that you would like to solve;  Decide upon the data output needed for different devices;  Identify the parts that are intelligent, interconnected and instrumented;  Consider benefits of solving your problem and people that would be involved in solving the problem.

Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved What data do I need? Get in a group of 3 or 4 and open the envelope you have been given:  Inside you have a number of problems (these are black);  Inside you should also have data that is needed to solve each problem (these are in blue). Carry out the following tasks: 1.Match each problem with the data that is needed to be input; 2.Use the blank cards to come up with some of your own ideas; 3.You may need to copy out some of the data cards as a card might be suitable for two different problems. Extension:  Check your results against another group in the class and discuss;  Within your group share your own problems that you would like to be solved.

Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved Planning your solution What problem do you wish to solve which is frustrating? How could your solution be instrumented, interconnected and intelligent? How will you know if you have solved the problem? How could this make money? Who would need to be involved? Being late to school Sometimes I am late for school but it isn’t my fault! Often my dad is out of bed late or is calling work mates on his phone. It means I’m not settled for the rest of the day and I don’t get to talk much to friend in form time. My tutor also has to open the register again just for me. Sensor to sound an alarm to wake up my dad and block his phone when I get out of bed. RFID tag on my school bag which registers me as I get into school. A list of roads that are clear to help me get to school on time. I will be on time for school and I will feel more calm. I’m sure other pupils have this problem and it could be sold to friends, schools and parents. Myself, my dad, school, the council.

Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved What data do I need? Plan a solution to your problem, identifying how it will be instrumented, intelligent and interconnected. 1.Open the [My Problem Plan] document; 2.Complete all four sectors: 2.1. Explain what the problem is, why the problem annoys you and how will happen if you solve the problem; 2.2. Explain what sensors or RFID tags will be used. Write down how the system will work. What inputs will go into the system, what outputs will you see? 2.3. What benefits will there be to you and other people if the problem is solved? 2.4. Who is involved in your problem, who can help you solve the problem?

Park House School © P.Marshman All Rights Reserved Sharing your idea Write down a list of data that you could output. For example:  What the time is now;  What time you must leave the house by;  Has your dad’s alarm sounded?  Is your dad’s smart phone on or off?  A map of what route to school you should take;  House early or late you are going to be at this moment in time. Prioritise each data item as “high” or “low” and discuss with a partner which ones you would show on a website and which ones you might show on a mobile device such as a mobile phone.
