North Carolina History SS Level 4Ms. Lewis Today we will learn about life after Settlers stayed: 1.The First Colony 2.Government 3.Carolina Territory

First Permanent Settlement In 1650, settlers from the tidewater area in Virginia moved to Albemarle sound in North Carolina. From To

English Charter 1663 – Charles II granted an English Charter to eight (8) men. A charter is a document that gives the men permission to settle and create a place to live. They were to name the territory (place) Carolina in honor of King Charles I.

A Second Charter 1665 – The King granted a second (2 nd ) charter to answer territorial questions and to extend the territory and make it bigger.

Who’s the Leader? From 1663 – 1729 the eight (8) men who were the original settlers, who were called the Lord’s Proprietors, were the ones in charge. They were the leaders of the people within the Carolina territory.

North Carolina’s Government The group, even though it was small in number, created their own government, these are the people who helped make decisions for the territory. There was a governor and a council.

North Carolina’s Government (Continued) Also John Locke wrote the Fundamental Constitution, which is a group of laws for the people to follow. Albemarle County was divided up into three (3) precincts, as the colony grew they added more precincts.

Precincts The precincts were groups of people who had their own local government. By 1729 there were eleven (11) precincts since the colony had grown so big.

Other Colonies Even though Carolina was the first permanent settlement there was another settlement located to the south in what is now, Charleston, South Carolina. During this time there was not a distinction between the North and South.

The Carolina Territory For twenty (20) years there was only one government for the Carolina Territory. Then smaller local governments within the precincts were established.

A Royal Colony In 1729, the Lords Proprietors sold their interest in Carolina to the Crown in England. Now it has become a royal colony and is controlled by the Crown. This took place until 1775.

The Difference There wasn’t much difference between the Royal Colony and the Lords Proprietors. Really the only difference was that instead of the Lords’ appointing (choosing) the leaders the Crown chose. The Precincts still voted to choose their leaders.

Counties Starting in 1739 there weren’t any precincts any longer. They now called them counties. Each county still had their own local government council, as it is today! The Carolinas were proprietary colonies. In 1729, seven of the Lords Proprietors sold their shares back to the Crown, and NC became a Royal Colony.
