Strategic Reflections to Evoke Change Talk

What is Motivational Interviewing? A collaborative communication style A quiet, curious process about listening A shift in style and attitude Gently guide the conversation toward a common focus Used to evoke their own sense of if, why & how they might change

Spirit Collaboration Collaboration (Partnership) “We are going to work together”Acceptance “I value you and am delighted to talk with you”Compassion “I want to understand and respect you and your experience”Evoking “I am going to create a space for you to share yourself and your story with me”

Questions are for ME. Reflections are for YOU Open Questions Affirmations Reflections Summarizing

Reflections Simple: repeating or rephrasing Complex: focus is on meaning and emotion

A statement can sound like either a question or a reflection based on the inflection at the end of the statement “You’re not sure you want to be here?” “You’re not sure you want to be here.” “Working is important to you?” “Working is important to you.” “You take pride in the chores you do?” “You take pride in the chores you do.”

Thinking Reflectively  Let’s warm up……………..Pair up  One person: Say a statement or 2  Other person: Ask “do you mean……………… Until you “get it”  Switch and Switch and Try again

Inferential Reflections O Expresses what the person seems to be meaning or feeling as they speak. Makes a guess as to what is beneath the surface. O “Something big has happened since we last talked” O You’re not sure you want to talk with me about this” O “You look like you don’t have much energy”

Practice

Overshoot/Undershoot O Overshoot: respond to the “absolute”/ intensify the emotion. “You can’t think of any way anyone would ever hire you” “You are really furious with your co-worker” O Undershoot: decrease intensity or using modifiers “You’ve really had very little problem in your life because of using pot” “You’re a little bit annoyed with your teacher”

Practice

Double-sided  Highlights the ambivalence “On the one hand, you’d rather not be here, and, on the other, you’re aware that you may need to start thinking about your future”  And not But

Practice O Picture here
