InVEST 3.0 – What’s Coming? Guy Ziv Scientific Development Lead

Future of InVEST InVEST 3.0 (no fixed deadline, hopefully Q4 of 2012) will be a major milestone for NatCap – Improvements in many models – Several new models – Rewriting and splitting manual into a User Guide and a Scientific Manual – Does not require ArcGIS, has it’s own user interface AND a ArcGIS toolbox – Output standardization and uncertainty analysis tools

Terrestrial/freshwater model: Tier 1 supporting service Terrestrial/freshwater model: Tier 1 that quantifies service Coastal Vulnerability Coastal Protection Overlap Analysis Renewable Energy Habitat Risk Assessment; Biodiversity Reservoir Hydropower Production Sediment Retention Managed Timber Production Crop Pollination Water Purification Marine model: Tier 1 that quantifies service Marine model: Tier 0 Marine model: Tier 1 supporting service InVEST Models & Linkages Aesthetic Quality RecreationRecreation Carbon Storage & Sequestration Sequestration (Blue Carbon) Agricultural Production Flood Risk Mitigation Groundwater Recharge Fisheries (including recreational) AquacultureAquaculture Marine Water Quality Optional model linkage, no sequencing Required/optional model linkage, sequencing needed Model in planning/scoping Foraged Products Model (NTFP) Livestock Production Avoided GHG Emission (Terrestrial) (Monthly yield coming) Terrestrial/freshwater model: Tier 0 Model coming soon!

Classification Coding – Expect to see new model/improvements within a few months Scoping – On our plate, something will definitely happen this year Planned – Have good ideas how to do, but not enough resources, may happen during 2012 but might not Priorities depend on funding, resources, capacity and need from InVEST users!

Changes in Existing Models Water Yield (planned) – Adding simple irrigation model Sediment Retention (coding) – New flow algorithm – Improved USLE form – Replacing retention by a scale-independent and slope- dependent Sediment-Delivery-Ratio – Adding trapping in reservoirs Nutrient Retention (scoping) – Improving export term (HSS) – Scale-independent retention

Changes in Existing Models Carbon Model (planned) – Adding (optional) exponential dynamics per land- use/land-cover class and carbon pool – Adding (optional) intermediate map (e.g. clearing before plantation) – Accepting (optional) input carbon stocks from Timber Model and Agricultural Production Model Timber Model (planned) – Coupling rotation period and harvested mass using simple tree growth model

Tools in the Works Standard Output (scoping) – Each model run will generate a standard HTML report with inputs, outputs and graphics Uncertainty Analysis (scoping) – A tool will allow to explore the impact of uncertainty in model parameters in biophysical quantities, prioritization, and scenarios ranking – User can perform a sensitivity analysis for all parameters
