10 Towards a European eHealth Area For Member States: 1) During the period 2004-2008, Member States should support deployment of health information networks for eHealth 2) This should be based on fixed and wireless broadband and mobile infrastructures and Grid technologies 3) During that period, the goal is to achieve: - In the short-term Greater access to accurate data and information for patients/citizens Safer and better healthcare Cost savings through the use of ICT solutions - In the mid-to long term Re-definition of the healthcare process and access to healthcare provided with, by and through ICT systems

11 Towards a European eHealth Area: In 2005 1) national or regional roadmap(s) for eHealth – Member States 2) a summary of European best practices on eHealth 3) a European health portal 4) a strengthening of early warning, detection, and surveillance of health threats through enhanced ICT tools => Use of open standards and open source solutions among health administrations in Member States should be promoted.
