6 Happy Thanksgiving Long before settlers came to the East Coast of the United States, the area was inhabited by many Native American tribes. Our national holiday really stems from the feast held in the autumn of 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag to celebrate the colony's first successful harvest. The first thanksgiving was in 1621. Today, Americans gather for a day of feasting. By Zachary Daunis

7 Happy Thanksgiving By Nathan Ehmer The Pilgrims had the feast to make friends with the Indians so the Indians would help them survive winter. The first Thanksgiving was the feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. After the feast the Indians helped the pilgrims survive winter. George Washington made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1789. In 1941 Thanksgiving was then always on a Thursday.
