Overview Aims to explore the impact of innovative tools and applications –Mobile computing and wireless networks Landscape study Case studies –Link between innovative technologies and physical learning space design Case studies and video clips Review of how the new technologies are influencing the design of physical learning space in the classroom and on campus

3. Case studies of innovative practice with e-learning Aim: –to produce up to 10 case studies illustrative of innovative approaches in e-learning across the post- 16 sector in the UK. Focusing on: –the effective use of wireless and mobile technologies to support and deliver learning and teaching in the post-16 and HE sectors. –The impact of the use of these technologies on physical learning spaces will also be examined, together with lessons learnt Outputs: –10 written case study summaries, 10 completed response templates –5 case studies illustrated through video –Building evidence of effective practice with e-learning

4. Landscape study on mobile and wireless technologies Review the current state of use of mobile and wireless technologies in relation to learning and teaching: Review the potential uses of mobile devices and wireless networks to promote new models of learning: Provide a strategic overview, showing where the use, or potential use, of these technologies fits within the strategic development plans and e-learning visions for institutions: Other outputs: –A summary report of key findings for a range of audiences within the JISC community. –A final report for the JISC, preceded by a draft for discussion.

5. Review of physical learning spaces To review how institutions are currently designing their learning spaces to incorporate the use of innovative technologies and to support e-learning in and outside of the classroom To produce a set of guidelines containing advice for UK post-16 and HE education senior management and estates teams on: –how to plan and design physical learning spaces to best support effective e-learning. –Including examples innovative current implementations and institution of the future scenarios To offer recommendations to the JISC on what future JISC development work may be required in supporting institutions with the design of physical learning spaces Further information about this project is available from: http://www.ldu.bham.ac.uk/espaces/index.htm

6. Publication Entitled: Innovative practice with e-learning Aim: –To synthesise outcomes from the Innovation strand Focus: –how innovative practice with e-learning can extend and enhance rather than replace current practice –how the use of technologies can benefit learners and maximise their learning potential –how to plan for effective deployment of these technologies in future developments within the institution, in particular for the impact they may have on learning space design Audience: –Senior managers and practitioners from across FE, ACL and HE sectors –Key stakeholders and policy makers Launch: –ALT-C – 6-8 th September 2005

7. Future work Implementation projects –Looking at the large scale implementation of an innovative technology within an educational context, to address an educational issue / challenge –Institutions to work in collaboration with one of three UK research laboratories on the implementation of one of their developed technologies –Looking to fund three two year projects –Circular to go out in April 2005
