Sentence pattern 6  An introductory series of appositives (with a dash and a summarizing subject)  Appositive, appositive, appositive – summary word S V.  An appositive is simply of renaming something that appears somewhere else in the sentence.  “Mr. Fitzgerald, the brilliant English teacher, imparted scintillating grammar lessons, and the students rejoiced.” Read Write Speak Listen

Sentence pattern 7  An internal series of appositives or modifier (enclosed by a pair of dashes or parentheses)  S ( or - appositive, appositive, appositive - or ) V  They learned the qualities of sportsmanship – cooperation, practice, and dedication – by carefully studying their coach’s example  The basic writing skills (good vocabulary, knowledge of grammar, sense of style) can be learned by almost everyone.  Tips  You need the dashes  If you remove the dashes and everything in between, you should still have a complete sentence Read Write Speak Listen

7  Huzzah! Sentence pattern 7a  A variation: a single appositive or a pair  S appositive V. (Use two dashes or parentheses or commas to enclose this appositive)  The sudden delight – sight of a double rainbow -- made me happy.  My vacation plans, to go to Australia, will have to wait another year.  Tips  You need two punctuation marks -- dashes, parentheses, commas – to set off the appositive correctly. Sentence pattern 8  Dependent clauses in a pair or in a series (at the beginning or end of the sentence)  If…., if…., if…., then S V.  When…., when…., when…., then S V.  If you focus, if you study, and if you practice, you can become a grammar ninja.  Whether you use a Mac, or whether you use a PC, you can play great games on a computer.  Tips  This is a great pattern to use for academic writing. It works well for a multi-point thesis statement or in a conclusion.  You can use two or three dependent clause. Arrange them in order of increasing impact. Read Write Speak Listen
