Planning rice breeding programs for impact Pedigree Selection in the IRRI Irrigated Breeding Program Parminder S. Virk PBGB Division

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Can anyone define “pedigree”?

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Describe the pedigree method Describe naming of pedigree at IRRI Describe crosses at IRRI Describe types of crosses Demonstrate IRRI nurseries Learning objectives

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact  The pedigree method owes its name to the pedigree record of selected plants maintained to trace ancestral relationship among such plants A detailed description of present day pedigree method was outlined by Love (1927) Pedigree Method

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact In this method individual plants are selected starting with F 2 and in the subsequent segregating generations their progenies are tested till the progenies become homozygous. During entire operation a record of all parent-offspring relationship is kept: PEDIGREE RECORD In this method each progeny in every generation can be traced back to the original F 2 plant Pedigree describes parents, grandparents, great-grandparents,... Pedigree Method

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Based on cross number and serial numbers of selected plants  IR numbers are assigned consecutively to the crosses (now IR80389) made at IRRI just before the hybrid seeds are incubated for germination  When plant selections are made from F 2 and subsequent generations of an IR cross, numerical designations are given for each breeding line How is the naming of pedigree at IRRI?

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Selections from the F 2 were grown in the pedigree nursery as F 3 rows: IR2061-1, ------IR2061-214 -----and so on up to IR2061-806 From selection 214, three plants were grown as F 4 selections: IR2061-214-1, IR2061-214-2 and IR2061-214-3 From selection IR2061-214-3, 10 plants were again selected as F 5 rows These selections were designated as IR2061-214-3-1 up to 2061-214-3- 10 From selection IR2061-214-3-8, three plant selections were made and planted in the pedigree nursery as F 6 rows IR2061-214-3-8-1, IR2061- 214-3-8-2 and IR2061-214-3-8-3 At maturity selection IR2061-214-3-8-2 appeared uniform and was bulk harvested and evaluated in replicated trials Example: IR2061-214-3-8-2 (IR28)

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact How is the naming of pedigree in your country/institute?

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Procedure What are the breeding objectives? High Yield Potential Short Growth Duration Superior Grain Quality Multiple disease and insect resistance Choice of Parents?

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact  Staggered sown 3 times each season  at 2-weeks interval IRRI Varieties are donors in various programs as  Irrigated  Rainfed  Flood prone and  Hybrid rice Donors for various traits (Hybridization Block)

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact What crosses do you currently focus on in your institute?

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Types of crosses:  Single crosses  Backcrosses  Three way/Top crosses  Around 900 crosses yearly (wet & dry season) Cross designation (IR80369) F1 Nursery

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact

F1

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact  Grow 2-6 rows (30 Plants) /cross  Rouge off-types  Identify accidental selfs Field Operations

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Protected:  In general susceptible to diseases and insects Unprotected:  In general resistant to diseases and insects First grow in blast nursery & Reject Susceptible populations Space planted 35 x 25 cm. Population size from 2,500- 5,000 individuals F2 Nursery

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Inoculate with BB Race1/Race2 Rogue susceptible/undesirable plants Harvest desirable plants (100-500 plants) Field Operations

IRRI: Planning Breeding Programs for Impact Four nurseries/year: January & July (Unprotected) May & November (Protected)  Space planted 30 x 20 cm  Every 20 th row is a check variety (4 Checks)  16,000 to 20,000 rows (30 plants) Pedigree nursery What system do you have in your institute?
