1 “T WO C ULTURES U NITED T HROUGH S COUTING ” PROJECT IN M ONGOLIA Scout Association of Mongolia

2 In Mongolia, 5% of the population is practiced by Islam, which language and tradition is differ from main culture of Mongolia. These people called Kazaks, which most of them live in Bayan- Olgii state.

3 Kazaks illiteracy rate is 6,8%, while national average illiteracy rate of 4.6%. The school droupout rate in Bayan-Olgii is 6.2% compared to 1.9% nationally, and Kazaks account for about 5% of the child and adolescent population in Mongolia. Due to their language and culture difference, higher percent of the Kazak children have lack of opportunities to learn.

4 P URPOSE OF THE P ROJECT According to the statistic’s, it shows that children with different culture have a lack of opportunities to learn. By developing this project by the Scout Association of Mongolia: Provide youth program for youth and unite two different culture through scouting Project will be mainly held in Bayan-Olgii state.

5 O BJECTIVES Provide youth program for youth and young people whom age of 6-15 years old to Kazak Children Kazak children to participate Scouting and through Scouting, they will achieve personal skills such as physical and social needs Mongolian and Kazak children’s have opportunity to teach other their own culture and tradition and understand it through Scout Peace Camp Number of school dropout will decrease through organized language training and Scouting

6 W HAT WE ’ VE DONE SO FAR ? By 15-20 October 2012 local Scout Leaders recruited potential leaders young people At 12-16 November 2012 trained 30 scout leaders to run the troop and packs for Kazak children in Kazak Community Between 1-15 December 2012 trained leaders organized scout troop in their schools. Almost 135 children joined scouting activities.

7 To working on between October – November 2012 translation of scout books from Mongolian to Kazak for children and during the Training of leaders we have organized reading on selected leaders from course.

8 L ESSON HAVE LEARNED Need to meet with parents before start involving youth in Scouting. Adult training should be include practical session which is how to reach out youth whom interested scouting. Making action plan of after leader training is provide us track on activities whom are participate training.

9 N EXT A CTIVITIES From Jan –Sep 2013 weekly Pack and Troop Meetings will held and receive reports Coaching on Mongolian language June 2013 organize Peace Camp selected venue.
