Welcome to Chemistry Welcome to Chemistry Ms. Gutierrez Austin High School Room 301

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is the study of the composition and structure of matter and the changes it undergoes. In course we will explore the history and nature of chemistry through course and laboratory work.

Branches of Chemistry Organic Chemistry The chemistry of carbon compounds Inorganic Chemistry The chemistry of non-carbon compounds Analytical Chemistry The identification of materials and their composition and structure and the changes they undergo Physical Chemistry The study of physical traits and changes also the relationship between matter and energy Biochemistry The process and materials which occur in living things Nuclear Chemistry Study of subatomic particles

Top 10 Reasons for taking CHEMISTRY 1.You can pronounce ‘phenolphthalein’ correctly. 2.If your parents ground you, you can dissolve their car. 3.The “mole” is your friend. 4.The world does not need any more lawyers (or accountants) 5.Terrorists respect you because they think you know how to blow things up. 6.You don’t have to mess with dead thins like in biology. 7.Goggles 8.You don’t have to get sweaty like in P.E. 9.Rutherford did it! 10.“ Hi…I’m a chemist” is a great pick up line!

Required Materials Ream of White Paper Bottle of glue 3-subject Notebook

Classroom Rules 1. Be on time and in your assigned seat. 2. Be prepared for class (Bring all required materials and assignments) 3. Be respectful towards your teachers, your classroom, your classmates (visitors), and yourself. 4. Follow directions the first time they are given. 5. Follow all Laboratory, Austin High School, and EPISD policies and requirements.

Classroom Consequences 1. Verbal Warning 2. Student-Teacher Conference 3. Parent-Teacher Contact 4. Student Disciplinary Referral Severe or threatening behavior, as listed in the Austin High School Code of Conduct, will require an immediate referral to the assistant principal’s office.

Remind 101 Remind101 provides a safe way for teachers to text message students and stay in touch with parents. Leverage the convenience and reach of communicating via text message, without breaking personal boundaries. Students will be alerted to upcoming test, quizzes, due dates, and other class information.

Extra credit will be issued upon request and the assignments will be determined by the teacher.

Academic Integrity The faculty expects from its students a high level of responsibility and academic honesty. It is imperative that a student demonstrate a high standard of individual honor in his or her scholastic work. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, statements, acts or omissions related to applications for enrollment or the award of a credit in chemistry, and/or the submission as one’s own work or material that is not one’s own. As a general rule, scholastic dishonesty involves one of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, and/or falsifying academic records. Students suspected of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary proceedings.

Chemistry Syllabus Signature Form After reviewing the syllabus and fully completing this document with your parents/legal guardians, please return to your instructor. The Chemistry Syllabus Signature Form and The Lab Safety Contracts are the first daily grades of the year.
