It pursues long-term research goals relevant for state and society. HGF budget is covered by federal government and Länder (90:10) One task of the HGF is to build and operate large-scale facilities as a service for external users

8 711: Naturwissenschaftliche Grundlagenforschung Funding of Basic Research in Germany: DFG DFG is an association of universities and research institutions DFG is the central, self-governing research funding organisation in Germany ) DFG funds basic research mainly at universities via projects DFG budget is covered by federal government and Länder (roughly 60:40) Funds are distributed according to the demand; i.e. to the number and volume of proposals
