Rome: Early Republic + Codes(laws) By: Brendan Wang

Introduction After monarchy was abolished the Romans created a new system to decide who would lead there would be annually elected consuls that would lead. There were exceptions to the rule like when there is a crisis and a dictator is elected for a short period. They were living in a aristocratic society where the wealthy ruled and made the decisions.

The Patricians vs the Plebeians The age old war between classes existed in Rome when it began as a republic. The patricians are the wealthy aristocrats that made the decisions and exploited the lower class. The Plebeians basicly the workers and the people that make Rome run everyday. comparison to today the Patricians are the 1% while the plebeians are everyone else.

Abuses of the patricians The Patricians took away many public lands that the plebeians used so they could gain personal profit The patricians would often after a plebeians farm was sacked or the soil was overworked loan money and make them pay high interest or else the plebeians would be killed or sold into slavery

Famine Many famines hit Rome and while the patricians had much money to buy their food the plebeians, with their overworked land was not producing any food and being sacked by gauls that came from the north. Famines cam in the years 496 bc, 492 bc, 486 bc, 477 bc, 476 bc, and finally in 456 bc and 453 bc.

Plebeian Secession or "Revolt" The plebeians were fed up by all of the abuse that the patricians gave them so they decided to not serve in the Roman army and instead go up to the sacred Mountain. They contemplated on creating their own city state and but the patricians worried that without the plebeians Rome would be destroyed so they agreed to many of the plebeians proposals.

Result The most important result I think is the plebeians ability to hold offices and have the plebeian tribunal.
