2 Persuasive Essay According page R40 of the Literature textbook, “persuasive writing should” “Hook the reader’s attention with a strong introduction” (This means that writers should begin their essays with a thought-provoking question or fact about the issue to gain the reader’s interest.) “State the issue and the writer’s position” Give opinions and support them with facts or reasons.” (Never write, “in my opinion” or “I think that …)

3 Persuasive Essay “have a reasonable and respectful tone” (formal tone) “answer opposing views” (Write about the opposite side of the argument and explain why your position is better.) “use sound logic and effective language” “conclude by summing up reasons or calling for action.” (a call to action means you encourage readers to do something!)

4 Persuasive Essay “Support for Your Argument” (pg R41) Statistics – facts stated in numbers Examples – specific instances that explain points Observations – events or situations you have seen Anecdotes – brief stories that illustrate points
