4. Why is fiction written? The purpose of fiction is to entertain the reader.

5. 3 Major Types of Fiction Novel - is long, with many chapters Novella - shorter than a novel, but longer than a short story Short story – brief enough to be read in one setting

6. Novel Has a plot with many events Has several characters who face challenges Often has more than one setting Often has more than one theme

7. Novella Plot has fewer events than the plot of a novel Several characters that face challenges May have more than one setting Sometimes has more than one theme

8. Short Story Has a plot with few related events One or more characters Usually only one main setting Usually only one main theme

9. Remember... Short story-always SHORT; you can read it in a very SHORT time Novella-longer book, like a chapter book for younger kids (Junie B. Jones or Magic Treehouse) Novel-LONGER than a novella (Harry Potter books, Holes)
