3 Pronouns A personal pronoun is a word that can be used in place of the name of a person, place, or thing. Depending on the way you use it in a sentence, a personal pronoun can be a subject or an object.

5 Rule 1 Use a subject pronoun as the subject of a sentence. Correct: I am writing about the nomination of Andy Walker for union representative. Incorrect: Andy and me work in the same department. Correct: Andy and I work in the same department. Examples: She is wearing blue nail polish on her toes. They ran up three flights of stairs.

6 Rule 2 Use a subject pronoun when the pronoun that refers to the subject follows a form of the verb be. Incorrect: The winner of the election will be him. Correct: The winner of the election will be he. Examples: It was I who called you a minute ago and then hung up. It was he who put the white tablecloth into the washing machine with the red sock.

7 Rule 3 Use an object pronoun as the object of a verb. Correct: Joe also knows him. Incorrect: Andy invited Joe and I to run his campaign. Correct: Andy invited Joe and me to run his campaign. Examples: Lee pushed me. We dragged them all the way home.

8 Rule 4 Use an object pronoun as the object of a preposition—a word such as in, on, of, for, with, and between. Correct: Please vote for him. Examples: She wrote all about us in her diary. Vera passed a note to him as she walked to the pencil sharpener.
