2 Dec. 1950: China Involved –Now…Korean War a MAJOR WAR By Spring 1951 –Stalemate (no win situation) –Small, bloody battles at 38 th parallel Remained like this for rest of war MacArthur keeps aggression: wants to push North Koreans back up to North Korea –MacArthur get reassigned out of South Korea 1952 U.S. President Election –MAJOR ISSUE: Korean War Republican candidate: Dwight D. Eisenhower (Ike) Promise to end war if elected Americans LOVE Ike (WWII) November 1952: Ike wins election –Peace talks failed (tried 4 times) –Ike goes to Korea (threaten nuclear)

3 July 1953: North Korea convinced to settle: 1.Threatened with nuclear action 2.Stalin dies (March 1953) North Korea no longer has ally Cease fire on July 27, 1953 3 years of fighting Cease-fire (stop) signed Cease-fire in effect until 3/11/2013 –Never signed formal peace treaty 2010: North Korea bombed South Korean ship –Killed 46 sailors

4 No victory in Korean War –North Korea still communist –South Korea still non- communist Both still divided at 38th parallel –One of world’s most highly guarded borders Long term results 1.Truman put troops there without formal declaration of war (UN ok’d) 2.Increase military spending –1947: CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)
