1. I. KOREAN WAR - causes 1949 Chinese Communist Party led by Mao Zedong wins control after a civil war in China After WWII, Korea had been divided into North & South Korea at the 38th parallel USSR helps to develop communist government in North Korea

2. Causes – cont. U.S.A. supported a non-communist government in South Korea June 1950 N. Korea invades S. Korea President Truman believes this is a threat to his “containment” policy U.S.A. asks the U.N. to stop the Communists

3. II. The War Begins Soldiers from 16 nations (most from U.S.A.) were led by General Douglas MacArthur (hero from WWII) North Korean troops reach the southern tip of South Korea MacArthur then lands troops just south of the 38th parallel

4. The War cont….. North Korean troops are forced to retreat back into North Korea U.N. forces push North Korean troops northward near China Communist leaders in China view the U.N. attack as a threat China warns that they will enter the war if the U.N. troops push any further (the warning is ignored)

5. III. China enters the war November 1950 Chinese soldiers enter North Korea Fighting continues for a year, with no victory; stalemate /deadlock MacArthur suggests a plan to blockade the Chinese coast and bomb China

7. IV. Outcome Truman begins truce talks in July 1951 which continued through 1952 The war had become very unpopular (especially with American people) As the Presidential election of 1952 draws near, the war is an important issue

8. Outcome cont….. Dwight D Eisenhower (Ike) runs for president In his presidential campaign, Ike promises to end the war quickly Ike wins the election and keeps his promise to bring an end to the war A compromise with North Korea & China is made

9. Outcome cont….. Eisenhower warns that he was ready to use nuclear weapons. North & South Korea remain two separate nations separated @ 38 th Parallel Americans are frustrated by the outcome of the war

10. Outcome….effects in USA Fear of Communism in USA spreads, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy McCarthy began investigations to seek out members of the Communist party in USA Many of his accusations lacked evidence, but the hearings / trials ruined the lives of many prominent people
