1 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Transition to Installation Erik Johnson ASD Deputy Director and Interface Manager NSLS-II CFAC Meeting November 9-10, 2009

2 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES How to get there from here Issues to address in orchestrating the transition Beneficial occupancy conditions for installation Systematic handoff of completed storage ring building spaces for technical installation Access to completed spaced for installation while construction continues Interaction of installation activity with LOB construction

3 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Installation and Operation Zones 2 5 4 3 RF L 1 Key Points: Utilities and infrastructure are segmented as shown BOD handovers aligned with support infrastructure Installation and testing within these segments Linac/Booster test/commission may overlap with construction activities B

4 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Phasing of Construction and Installation Beneficial Occupancy Installation

5 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES ASD Technical installation (preliminary) n.b. Technical installation is gross equipment location and component testing Subsystem testing, Integrated testing and commissioning follow

6 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Red lines indicate boundaries of Pentant 1 Block arrow shows likely experimental floor loading location - back trucks into building to unload - laydown area, some storage/stock area The first slice; Pentant 1 plus…

7 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Crosswalk Building to Machine

8 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Pentant 1 installation Zones 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 26 Four zones to consider Note also colors….. Note the numbers – Dark boxes are in tunnel components Light are ‘on the floor’

9 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Map out schedule by area Note color of bars Dates from the project schedule but organized by the space they utilize

10 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Viewed as a Gantt chart schedule 1 of 2 About 20 week duration for installation Note color of bars

11 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Even Cell Components G3 G5G6G2G4 G1 Black border indicates an even cell ID Section

12 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Odd Cell Components G1 G3 G5G6G2G4 ID Section Water manifolds are shown schematically as a double red line (Aluminum) a double green line (Copper) Red border indicates an odd cell

13 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Typical cell rack groups Blue 234 Blue border indicates a rack group 2, 3, or 4 racks wide Cable tray is shown schematically as a double dashed line G3 G5G6G2G4

14 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: ~ 1/3 of material in building Installation starting 26 2 Activities: Prepare tunnel Stage components on floor Start cable tray on mezzanine

15 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: Most material in building Installation on mezzanine Begin in tunnel 26 4 Activities: Stage components on floor Start racks on mezzanine

16 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: Most material in building Installation on mezzanine Installation in tunnel 26 6 Activities: Tray and manifolds in place in tunnel Racks well underway Stage cable and start pulling

17 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: Multipole girder installation 26 8 Activities: Begin Girder installation Start populating racks Begin Utility installation in SB

18 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: Half way in schedule 26 10 Activities: Girder installation Populating racks Utility installation in SB

19 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: Most wiring pulled Process utilities connected 26 12 Activities: Girder installation Populating racks Terminating cables

20 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: About ¾ through schedule 26 14 Activities: Girder installation Racks populated Terminating cables

21 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: About ½ vacuum complete 26 16 Activities: Girder installation Cable pulls all done Testing underway

22 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: About 2/3 vacuum complete 26 18 Activities: Girder installation Cable pulls all done Testing underway

23 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Storage ring Pentant 1 installation: Week 24 25272823 Exp’l floor Tunnel Service Building 2425262722 Mezzanine 23 Status: All equipment in place System testing underway 26 20 Activities: Final utility connections Equipment shakeout

24 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Requirements and Interfaces From Conventional Facilities Beneficial occupancy of pentant 1 including utilities Access on ring side through an area still held by contractor for material handling Access through vehicle tunnel for material handling to service building 1 Staging area outside of building (LOB 5 area) From ASD (NSLS-II) Coordination with contractor to allow construction to continue

25 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES LOBs and installation coordination 2 4 3 1 5 Key Issues: LOB construction not yet settled LOB 1, 2, and 3 in budget LOB 4 and 5 hoped for scope addittion if all goes well LOB will follow building phasing (roughly) May need to free LOB5 LOW before installation completed

26 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Access coordination Possible external access points Construction entrance in P5 LOB 2 Staging Loading dock

27 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Possible complications and wrinkles Epoxy painted experimental floor – need to protect? Construction of LOBs – could impact on availability or access depending on build-out and schedule Greater level of detail needed in some installation components XFD installation needs to be factored into schedule

28 BROOKHAVEN SCIENCE ASSOCIATES Summary Planning for transition well under way BORE process under development (ESH/CFD) Basic installation plan established for ASD XFD installation plan under development Coordination with contractor(s) going forward Need access to make use of turned over buildings May need laydown area outside of building Need to stay out of contractors way! Discussions already under way with Torcon
