2. Sight Words Often called high frequency words because they account for a large percentage (up to 75%) of the words used in beginning children's print materials. Refer to words which do not adhere well to the principles taught in phonics lessons (e.g. WAS, THE, ONE, OF, SAID), and which can not be decoded.

3. Why Teach Sight Words? Knowing words immediately on sight is important to reading fluency which is how smoothly students read. Learning sight words and developing fluency are important steps leading to comprehension which is the ultimate goal. Combined with Fundations (phonics) creates a balanced reading program to help all of our students reach their goals.
