When am I ever going to use this? Percent in my life S. Student

Shopping There are two different ways percent is used when you go shopping. One way is when you save money because items are on sale or discounted. The other way is when you have to pay more money for sales tax or a surcharge.

Discount Mary bought a jacket which was originally priced at $ 125.00 and was on sale for 15% off. What is the sales price of the jacket? Find 15% of $125.00. (.15)(125) = 18.75 (.15)(125) = 18.75 Subtract the discount from the original price 125 – 18.75 = 106.25 The sales price is $106.25. A discount is when you save money. Sometimes a discount is a flat rate but more often it is a percentage.

Discount James bought a pool stick which was originally priced at $ 75.00 and was on sale for 25% off. What is the sales price of the pool stick? Find 25% of $ 75.00. (.25)(75) = 18.75 (.25)(75) = 18.75 Subtract the discount from the original price 75 – 18.75 = 56.25 The sales price is $56.25. A discount is when you save money. Sometimes a discount is a flat rate but more often it is a percentage.

Sales Tax Mary bought a jacket for $106.25 however, she must pay 8.5% tax. What is the final cost of the jacket? Find 8.5% of $106.25. (.085)(106.25) = 9.03125 (.085)(106.25) = 9.03125 Round to the nearest cent. Add to the price. 106.25 + 9.03 = 115.28 The sales price is $115.28. Sales tax is money collected by the retailer on behalf of the government. It is a percentage but differs by location. Sales tax is money collected by the retailer on behalf of the government. It is a percentage but differs by location.

Sales Tax James paid $56.25 for his pool stick however, he must pay 6% tax. What is the final cost of his pool stick? Find 6% of $ 56.25. (.06)(56.25) = 3.375 (.06)(56.25) = 3.375 Round to the nearest cent. Add to the price. 56.25 + 3.38 = 59.63 The sales price is $59.63. Sales tax is money collected by the retailer on behalf of the government. It is a percentage but differs by location.

Gratuities Gratuities are a fancy way of saying tip. A tip is something you give someone for good service. It is usually a percent but can also be a flat rate. For example, when my Dad gets his car from the valet he gives them $2 no matter what it costs him to park.

Tipping The bill for dinner was a total of $56.85. The service was good so we decided to leave a 20% tip. How much should we leave as a tip? Find 20% of $ 56.85. (.20)(56.85) = 11.37 (.20)(56.85) = 11.37 At this point most people round the number or use estimation. I would probably leave $11.50 as the tip or $12.00. It is customary to tip a waiter or waitress 15-20% on a meal in a restaurant.

Tipping The bill for dinner was a total of $ 211.65. The service wasn’t so good so we decided to leave a 15% tip. How much should we leave as a tip? Find 15% of $ 211.65 (.15)(211.65) = 31.7475 (.15)(211.65) = 31.7475 This number must be rounded because it goes past the hundredth place. I would probably leave $32.00 as the tip. It is customary to tip a waiter or waitress 15-20% on a meal in a restaurant.

Reflection There are many different ways that people use percent in their lives. There is really no way to avoid using percent. It is everywhere from shopping, eating, banking and especially credit cards. Percent is part of our lives.
