* Of means to multiply Using percents

 To calculate sales tax of an item, simply multiply the cost of the item by the tax rate.  Example: You buy a car for 20,000 dollars and pay 5 % in tax. How much is tax? Tax = 20,000 times 5% = 20,000 times 0.05 Tax = 20,000 times 0.05 = 1,000 dollars. The cost with tax is 20,000 + 1000 = 21,000

 With a partner or your group complete investigation 4.1 “determining tax”

 Multiply total by percent.  Bill is $ 45.25  You want to leave a 15 % tip.  45.25 x.15= 6.79  6.79 + 45.25= $ 52.04 is the cost of your total bill tip included.

 With your partner or group complete 4.2 computing tips

 Take the original cost of an item and multiply it by the discount in decimal form.  Example: And item costs $25. You are given a 15% discount. What is the cost of the item after the discount?  25 x.15= 3.75  25- 3.75= 21.25  $21.25 is your final cost.

 Take the original cost and multiply by what percent you have left to pay after the discount is taken.  Example: And item costs $25. You are given a 15% discount. What is the cost of the item after the discount?  25 x.85= 21.25  $21.25 is the final cost

 Complete the discount word problems. You may work with a partner on questions 1-5. 5-10 you need to work alone.
