3 Biodiesel is an environmentally safe alternative to standard diesel fuel Diesel equivalent but processed from biological sources (vegetable oil and waste oils) B20 (20% Biodiesel, 80% standard diesel fuel) can be used in unmodified diesel engines Works as a solvent in fuel lines and fuel filters Engine manufactures cite less engine wear as benefit TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Project Background

4 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Assemble a working model of our project Test the plant using virgin feedstock Implement our research and knowledge to redesign faulty or poorly working parts of the system Complete our final working model Test the system with dirty feedstock to verify actual system capabilities Compose the final project report and display board for the final open house. 7 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Current Progress Basic setup Clear hosing will be used to transfer fluid Two of the tanks are raised so the pump can fit under them The top tank is the methoxide mixer and will be gravity fed into the reactor

8 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Current Progress Heating elements have been welded into the reactor The heating element on the right has a temperature control attached The heating element on the left will be hard wired but has no temperature control

9 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Current Progress Heating element with temperature control The other heating element will be used only to help fluid reach desired temperature All electrical components will be wired to a switch box (ie pumps, heating elements, motor)

10 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Current Progress Methanol recovery design Pictured is the design for condensing the methanol vapor Vapor runs through a copper pipe inside PVC Cold water runs through PVC and cools vapor

11 TEAM 12: Low-Cost, Portable, Off-Grid Biodiesel Production Plant Current Progress Rough design Main aspect is that we will use one pump to transfer fluid from tank to tank Series of ball valves will direct fluid flow We will also have a motor to mix fuel in wash tank
