Some words may mean the same thing but have a stronger meaning than another. Author’s use these to show shades of the meaning of a word. For example yelled is a stronger word than said. Shouted can be even stronger than yelled, but whispered is softer than all of them. We can show the shade or change of meaning by listing them from softest to strongest Whisper, said, yelled, shouted
