3 History In 1985, AIAA Hampton Roads Section (HRS) instituted a scholarship program for graduating high school seniors. The scholarship was conceived by Mr. Peterson (Langley Research Center Director and HRS Council member) and Mr. Bobby Berrier (HRS Chairman). A major fund raising drive to fund the scholarship was led by Dr. John Duberg, Dr. Lee Beach, and Dr. John Whitesides (HRS Council members).

4 History, Cont. Beginning with one scholarship in 1985 of $1000, the program has grown such that three scholarships of $2,000 each were awarded in 2014. As of May 2014, a total of 59 awards totaling more $98,850 have been awarded. Futures In Aerospace.

5 Objective Scholarship Award To encourage graduating high school seniors to pursue a career in engineering or the physical or applied sciences pertinent to aerospace.

6 Eligibility Scholarship Award – Applicants must be graduating from a high school located in the area served by the AIAA HRS – Dependent of a member of the Hampton Roads Section of the AIAA. – Applicants must be applying for enrollment in a higher education institution with a major in engineering or the physical or applied sciences pertinent to aerospace.

7 Scholarship Application Requirements Scholarship recipients shall be selected on the basis of the following items: – An essay, limited to 1200 words, on the proposed area of study in engineering, physical sciences, or applied science and its relation to aerospace. – Scholastic achievement. – Letter of recommendation. – Potential for leadership.

8 Administration Scholarship Award The AIAA HRS Scholarship Chairman is responsible for the day-to-day business of the “Futures in Aerospace” scholarship. A Scholarship Committee for evaluating scholarship applications. All scholarship funds and accounting are the responsibility of the HRS Scholarship Chairman and HRS Treasurer The HRS Council maintain oversight of the scholarship process at all times.

9 Selection Process Scholarship Award Scholarship Committee comprised of no less than three (3) AIAA HRS members evaluate scholarship applications Scholarship Chairman is not one of the evaluators. Scholarship applications are independently evaluated by each Scholarship Committee. The final scores from each evaluator are added to determine the scholarship winner(s). In case of a tie, the ranking is decided in a special meeting of the Scholarship Committee called by the Scholarship Chairman.

10 Scholarship Award Eighty percent of all dividend and capital gain distributions for the fiscal year preceding a scholarship award are applied toward a “Futures in Aerospace” scholarship(s). Each year the scholarship winner’s name(s) are engraved on a permanent plaque continuously displayed at the Reid Conference Center at NASA Langley Research Center.
