2 Code of Ethics In groups discuss what is a code of ethics and why it is needed with examples

3 Code of Ethics – coaches – referees – all officials Maintain standards for sport and sports coaches To inform and protect members of the public using their services

4 Code of Ethics – what? Integrity Responsibility Competence Confidentiality Framework in which to work Guidelines – not instructions

5 RESPONSIBILITY Managers take responsibility for the observation of the principles of a code of ethics

6 RESPONSIBILITY Misconduct – is what?

7 Misconduct Bad timekeeping Unreasonable or unexplained absence Lack of application Wilful damage to property of equipment

8 HUMANITY Respect the rights - dignity – worth of every human being – right to self-determination Officials must treat everyone equal – regardless of sex – ethnic origin – religion – age – sexual persuasion - political persuasion

9 RELATIONSHIPS Well-being – health and future of individual performers Accept responsibility for own behaviour and performance in training – competition – social life

10 RELATIONSHIPS Responsible for setting and monitoring boundaries with performers – working relationships – friendships Opposite sex Young person No misinterpretation Mutual trust and respect

11 COMMITMENT Make clear in advance with players and employers – number of sessions – fees – method of payment Expectations of outcome of coaching Declare all coaching commitments Find out if any prospective client is receiving guidance from other coaches to discuss situation Make aware of any conflict and obligation to performer and governing body

12 CO-OPERATION Link with education and performance – training Communicate and co-operate with registered medical practitioners regarding injuries and psychological problems

13 CONFIDENTIALITY Reach agreement what performer what is confidential and what can be public domain

14 ABUSE OF PRIVILEGE Not exert undue influence over performers for personal benefit or reward

15 PERSONAL STANDARDS Display high personal standards at all times to all concerned Take pride in personal appearance – image of health – cleanliness – functional efficiency Never smoke when coaching or officiating Not drink alcohol soon before coaching

16 SAFETY Safety of performers within limits Safe working environment Keep within approved practice in sport Activities suitable for age – experience – ability Players made aware of personal responsibility in terms of safety

17 ISSUES OF COMPETENCE Coaches and officials only work in areas they have been trained Know when to refer performers to other workers Increase professional development Welcome evaluation of work by peers
