Discipline Specific Project Margo Sabin EDUC 2332 3 December 2013

Title of Project Identifying plants and their adaptations

Objectives The students will observe differences in plant adaptations and categorize plant from the different leaves Students will identify different plant characteristics and infer the uses of the different plant adaptations. The ability to effectively understand and use the technologies involved such as: websites, microscopes and Leaf snap app in order to carry out this project. Students must be able to compromise and work effectively with others within a small group and demonstrate the ability to self-organize

Purpose  To identify different types of plant and their adaptations  Using different types of technology in a science class to enhance learning  Present material in a cooperative way

Technologies Used  LeafSnap App  Class Blog  Website Website

Timeline  Lab 1:  Collect leaves & begin identifying using microscope and LeafSnap app. and website  Lab 2:  Arrange all notes in journal and do any necessary research on leaf/plant  Make poster to put up on class blog  Lab 3:  Gallery walk for information presentation

Assessment Formative  For Lab 1 & 2 – you will be graded on participation and your journal entries. Every entry must have pertinent information, enough that I can gain an understanding of what your leaf is and some of the adaptations. The scores for each entry will be as follows:  1 – Not enough information, no organization, no drawings = 70-80  2 – Good information, organization lacking structure, good drawings = 80-90  3 – Excellent information, organized well and good drawings – 90-100 Summative 1 = poor (does not include enough information, no pictures, no common name and/or genus and species, not organized at all) 2 = needs improvement (include some important information, messy, not very creative, not organized) 3= average (Genus & species and common name are listed, somewhat organized, creative, pictures accurate) 4 = Good (you found all information to answer the questions, well organized, creative, Genus & species match common name and they are correct) 5 = Excellent (Very well organized, very creative, all information is accurate and helpful, pictures are nice and helpful, correct Genus & species and common name, goes above and beyond adding extra information)

Conclusion By the end of this project, students will gain a better understanding of plant adaptations and how to effectively use technology in a field biology setting.
