1 Advanced Algebra II Notes 4.2 Function Notation Relation: Any set of ordered pairs. Any relationship between two variables. Function: A relation in which for each independent variable (x, or input value) there is only one dependent value (y, or output value). The graph will pass the vertical line test. Function notation: f(x) = 2x + 3 rather than y = 2x + 3 Can be continuous or discrete.

2 Function f is defined by the equation: Function g is defined by the graph at right: Find these values: a) f(8) = __________ b) f(-7) = _________ c)g(1) = _________ d) g(-2) = __________ Find the Domain and Range of each function above: g(x) Domain _______________Range _______________ f(x) Domain ______________Range _______________

3 Determine whether each relation below is a function: a)b)c) d) e)f)

4 Determine whether each relation below is a function: g) independent variable: the age of each student in this class dependent variable: the height of each student h) independent variable: an automobile in Kentucky dependent variable: that automobile license plate number i) independent variable: the day of the year dependent variable: the time of sunset
