The smokers were on one side of the restaurant, the non smokers were on the other side. 2. Eighty eight people came to my birthday party yesterday!

6 WHAT DID YOU LEARN IN SCHOOL TODAY? We expect schools to teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but is that the only kind of learning happening each day? What has school prepared you for? Academics, or…??

7 MALCOLM LONDON - Grew up in Chicago’s Austin neighborhood, begin writing poetry to give a voice to the struggles faced by his community “The idea that poetry is only for dead, old white dudes who lived in the 1600s, right, but it’s not. So for me, the stage was a place for me to have my voice heard.” - Currently works as an activist in public schools, giving presentations and workshops about the importance of poetry.

9 LITERARY TERMS Metaphor: The comparison of one thing to another. Example: Her smile was a ray of sunshine. Simile: The comparison of one thing to another using ‘like’ or ‘as.’ Example: Her smile was like a ray of sunshine. Allusion: A reference to something (person, event in history, etc.) He sounded like Martin Luther King Jr. when he spoke to the class. Tone: The attitude of the author (are they sarcastic, sincere, sad, etc.?). Diction: The author’s choice and use of specific words.

11 LOUDER THAN A BOMB - SPOKEN WORD AT UPLIFT - The national slam poetry competition Louder Than a Bomb takes place once every year in Chicago. - Students from across the city compete in teams for the championship - Uplift’s team, led by Mr. Bullie, has represented the school successfully many times, even making it to the final round of competition!

12 DOCUMENTARY NOTES For each student you meet in the film, write: 1) Their name 2) A brief description of them 3) Challenges they face, either in school or at home 4) Why they write poetry and perform at Louder Than a Bomb

Read and annotate the article, and answer the following questions: 1) What is Louder Than a Bomb? 2) How did the competition begin? 3) What were the founders of LTAB (Louder Than a Bomb) trying to create do by creating this competition? 4) According to Kevin Coval, one of the founders of the competition, why is writing poetry important for youth? 5) Do you think competitions like Louder Than a Bomb can help create change in our society? Is this the best way for youth to speak out?

19 WRITE A LETTER! Since it is Ms. Griswold’s last day, she wants to know what you thought of English this year! She is still learning how to be a good teacher, and she wants you to have a voice in what she does or doesn’t do with her future students. Write a letter to a future student in Ms. Griswold’s sophomore English class. Make sure to include: 1) A positive thing they should look forward to doing 2) A warning of something negative about the class 3) A suggestion of something that they (as a student) should do to succeed 4) A suggestion of something that they (as a student) should NOT do
