 To support children with additional needs into their first year of secondary school to feel safe and confident about being in secondary  To support primary and secondary schools to develop resources, activities and programmes in relation to achieving the above outcome for children.

Lots of things happening at once ! Puberty and physical changes Increase in social awareness – changes to Social networks Systematic changes in the way school is organised

 Girls  Students with existing behaviour difficulties  Low achievers  Students with poor parental support.

 Students with SLCN who experience the most difficulty are those with:  Low vocabularies  Poor receptive language (understanding of language)  These areas have BIG impact on accessing curriculum and getting by socially.

 To become familiar with the layout of their new school  To become familiar with routines of their new school  To feel confident and safe about attending secondary school  To meet with other students who will be attending their new secondary school, and meet school staff  To gain coping strategies to support their transition to secondary school.

 To be able to deliver small group work around transition  To gain strategies to support children with additional needs  To understand the purpose of a transition program  To get to know some of their students.

 Increase in the number of children feeling happy about attending secondary school  100% of students reported confidence in finding way around school after groups  Greater awareness of routines  Greater awareness of wider aspects of school life  Less anxiety type questions being asked  92% of staff reported increased knowledge about running transition groups  90% of staff found the transition programme useful in supporting students to transition to year 7.

Biggest thing that helps is Positive people who:  ‘Are easy to talk to  Listen to me  Get to know me  Make an effort to talk to me  Answer my questions  Help me picture where I am going.’

 Not having enough information about secondary school  Getting unclear or mixed messages  Bullies  People not listening  Not being able to visit secondary school.

Year 6 identified meeting criteria of:  Statement for SLI  SA or SA+ for SLCN  Statement with secondary SLCN  Vulnerable children Only for students attending Westminster Secondary Schools Secondary schools free to organise out-of-borough children to join

The areas we chose to focus on are based on what students in Westminster have told us matters to them the most:  Getting lunch  Not getting lost  Knowing where I should be  Finding nice people who can help  Not getting bullied  Homework and getting organised.
