2. The school has an ‘Inclusion Manager’. The school has an ‘Inclusion Manager’. This role is often called SENCO, (Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator) as it covers SEN. It also covers some other vulnerable groups including Gifted and Talented children.

3. All pupils have access to the National Curriculum. Differentiation is designed to meet the needs of individual learners. At Castledown we ensure that all pupils are included.

4. The expectations for SEN children are the same as for those children without SEN, i.e. we expect and set targets based on two sub levels (4 points) progress in each academic year. This expectation is the same regardless of the level of SEN.

5.  The term ‘Special Educational Needs’ applies to all pupils who have SEN because of:- –Cognitive and learning difficulties, including general learning difficulties (GLD) and specific learning difficulties (SpLD, i.e. dyslexia) –Communication and interaction difficulties including speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) –Emotional, behavioural and social difficulties (EBSD) –Sensory/physical difficulties, including physical difficulties (PD), visual impairment (VI), and hearing impairment (HI).

6. At Castledown pupils with SEN fall into the following categories:-  Concern(C)  School Action(SA)  School Action +(SA+)  Statement(S)

7. At Castledown  School Action = 51children (15.22%)  School Action + = 18 children (5.37%)  Statements = 10 children (2.98%)  Total children on SEN register = 79 children = 23.58%  National figure = 19.6%

If a teacher has a pupil in their class, who is not making academic progress or is working more than one sub-level below the age-related expectation, then that pupil may need to be included on the SEN register.
