AP Literature and Composition “It’s a ‘Which Imagery is it?’ Wednesday!” October 21, 2009 Mr. Houghteling

Imagery Man On your handout, put your description /definition of each imagery underneath the imagery type.

AGENDA: Use Imagery Man on selected quotes. Mini-lecture on historical and archetypal criticism. The characterization of Shadrack.

Where do we go from here? As we read, we will apply historical, gender, and archetypal criticism to the text (additional information on archetypal criticism will be provided). We will focus on Morrison’s use of characterization, setting, and symbolism.

Before you begin reading: To utilize historical criticism, we must understand the time period in which a text was written. Sula was published in 1973. What was going on in the US in 1973? Make a chart or bullet list. Use some technological resources to help you find important events of the time.

To better understand: The first few pages (pp. 3-6) are written from the perspective of 1973. The novel then goes back to 1919 (World War I). The majority of the novel takes place in the 1920s, but it was written in 1973. We must be aware of the presence of both eras in the novel.

What did you read? You should have read pages 3-16, looking for types of imagery. Can we identify the setting and characterization of Shadrack. As we read right now, consider the perspective from which this is written (1973). What type of place is Bottom?

Characterization - What the character says and doesn’t say, does and doesn’t do. -Physical appearance. -What the other characters say about him or her. -How the other characters act towards him or her. As you read, remember which methods are the most trustworthy!

Homework Read pages 17-29. Create a family tree related to Helene’s family. Write two questions related to the text.
